The race for Best Director at the Oscars is shaping up much like the race for Best Actor. While American Hustle seemed to be the favorite in both categories, the film has been shut out of both major awards thus far. That trend continued on Thursday when Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron took home the Critics Choice Award for Best Director, beating out American Hustle’s David O. Russell.
If you haven’t checked out Gravity yet, here’s a quick synopsis:
A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.
There is still a lot that can happen between now and the Oscars, but Cuaron has definitely carved out his place as the frontrunner in the race for Oscar gold. Russell is still viewed as an Oscar darling, but he’s always been a bridesmaid and this year could watch Cuaron become the bride over him.
