Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning apparently had a little bit to do with one of his former head coaches landing a job this week as he made a call to the Detroit Lions to endorse his friend, Jim Caldwell.
It was an incredible gesture by Manning, especially seeing as he’s a little busy this week preparing for this Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.
However, it’s also a gesture that almost went to waste.
According to Lions president Tom Lewand, general manager Martin Mayhew almost didn’t take the call because he didn’t recognize the phone number.
Lewand said Peyton Manning called Martin Mayhew on Caldwell’s behalf, that Martin almost didn’t take call cuz didn’t recognize number

Thankfully he did, and Manning gave him a full breakdown of how Caldwell could help the organization, and more importantly, how he could help in the development of QB Matthew Stafford.
Manning has more than once credited Caldwell with helping in his development throughout the years, so it’s no surprise that he opened up the Lions’ eyes to the fact that he could do the same for Stafford.
