Last week, the Vanderbilt Commodores lost maybe the best coach in the history of their program.
In three seasons, James Franklin, who left to become head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, led the Commodores to three straight bowl games and two bowl victories.
To try and replace Franklin and sustain the momentum he has created, the Commodores are looking for another hot, young assistant coach.
According to Barton Simmons of 24/7 Sports, the Commodores have narrowed their search down to two names – Clemson Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris and Stanford Cardinal defensive coordinator Derek Mason.
We have confirmed with sources that the hire will come from the college ranks despite the emergence of some names from the NFL.
Further, we are hearing that Chad Morris is gaining significant traction. We have felt and have been told all along that Derek Mason was the name to beat. With a late push in favor of Morris, we believe that this decision could go either way at this point.
Simmons says a decision could come as early as tomorrow.
