We here at FanSided are pretty big on biathlons — especially, but certainly not limited to, those of the tank variety — and we found the story of Lanny and Tracy Barnes too good not to share. Lanny, a biathlon competitor who was on the U.S. team for the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, wasn’t able to participate in the final qualifying events for the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. However, a kind soul who did qualify decided to selflessly give up her spot on the American team so Lanny could compete.
The person? Lanny’s twin sister, Tracy.
Tracy, who participated in the 2006 but not the 2010 Games, explained the motivation behind her decision:
She’s having a great year, and I think when you care enough about someone you’re willing to make that kind of sacrifice.
I think right away when I heard she got sick because I knew that the likelihood of her making the team was pretty slim being sick.
I’ve trained with her for 15 years right alongside her. I know how hard she works. I know how much she wants it (Reuters).
Considering all my twin brother ever wants to do is commit identify theft and defraud me, as well as that whole nasty incident on prom night that need not be mentioned, I can only stand up and applaud Tracy’s generous act.
(But seriously, Tom, please return the credit cards.)
