United States skier Brita Sigourney celebrated her birthday in a way that very few people will be able to experience. On Friday, not only did Sigourney celebrate her 24th birthday, she also achieved a lifetime goal of qualifying for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
While Sigourney finished just ninth in a women’s ski halfpipe event in Park City, Utah, she did enough to earn a berth in the Sochi Games where she will have the opportunity to represent her country and compete for a spot on the podium.
Sigourney has a silver and bronze medal in the ski halfpipe from the X Games in 2011 and 2012, but claiming an Olympic medal would be her biggest achievement to date.
The United States team for the ski halfpipe currently includes Sigourney and 20-year-old Maddie Bowman, who won the event on Friday, and there is one final spot up for grabs.
Angeli VanLaanen is in the driver’s seat for the final spot on the team, which she can clinch with a top three finish on Saturday.
