Roger Federer eased his way into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight sets victory over Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-2 6-2 6-3. This marks the 13th consecutive time that Federer has made it to the fourth round in Melbourne.
Andy Murray also made it into the fourth round with a straight sets win over 26th seed Feliciano Lopez 7-6 6-4 6-2. Murray will face Stephane Robert of France, who has made history by becoming the only man to make the fourth round of the tournament after losing in qualifying but getting a “lucky loser” place in the main draw when another player withdrew.
Maria Sharapova also moved into the fourth, overcoming a poor second set to beat Alize Cornet of France 6-1 7-6. Defending champion Victoria Azarenka powered past Yvonne Meusburger 6-1 6-0, but the shock of the day on the women’s side of the draw saw 10th seed Caroline Wozniacki lose to unseeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.
