Russian national team manager Fabio Capello has spoken of his belief that former team Real Madrid will win the Champions League this season.

Madrid have won nine European Cup titles, but haven’t been able to win the fabled La Decima (The Tenth) despite having chased the elusive title since Zinedine Zidane’s volley won them their ninth title in 2002.

Capello believes that the squad depth in the Spanish capital, and with Barcelona adapting to the style of new manager Tata Martino, Real are in an excellent position to challenge for domestic and European trophies. Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Capello said:

Real is favourite to win La Liga and a tenth European Cup. The squad is extraordinary. The change of coach at Barcelona has brought something different. The team plays faster, attacking football and scores lots of goals, but it is still developing.

Whether manager Carlo Ancelotti will thank his compatriot for piling even more pressure on Madrid, there is, as every year, an expectation that Real will challenge for the Champions League, having reached the semi-final stage each of the last three years.
