Horton has worked on Whisenhunt’s staff before, having been the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals 2011-2013. He also served with Whisenhunt on the staff of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the mid-2000s, this time as defensive backs coach.
A three-time Super Bowl champion (once as player with the Dallas Cowboys, twice as coach with the Steelers), Horton is a hugely respected defensive coach, and was considered for the head coaching role at the Cardinals before being passed over for the job in favour of Bruce Arians. In Arizona Horton ran a version of the 3-4 defence favoured by the Steelers and Dick LeBeau.
