An militant Islamic group in the North Caucus area of Russia claimed responsibility for the twin suicide bombings in Volgograd last month, and posted a video threatening the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, according to a report on ESPN.
The bombings killed 34 people, and the video has raised security concerns ahead of next month’s Games. In the video, two men, speaking in Russia, addressed President Vladimir Putin: “if you hold these Olympics, we will give you a present for the innocent Muslim blood being spilled all around the world: In Afghanistan, in Somalia, in Syria.”
The group reportedly identified themselves as Vilayat Dagestan, and are one of a number of groups who seek to establish an Islamic state in the North Caucuses, just to the east of Sochi.
There was no immediate reaction from Russian security services, but there are sizeable security measures being implemented ahead of Sochi.
