MLB Rumors: Masahiro Tanaka to decide on team in coming days

It appears that we are nearing the completion of the Masahiro Tanaka sweepstakes, this according to David Kaplan.

Tanaka, who is currently reviewing at least five potential offers (we know the Chicago Cubs made a formal offer and suspect the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers did as well) and is likely to decide by either Tuesday or Wednesday where he plans to spend the next five to six years of his career.

He also told me decision should come Tuesday/Wednesday so addtl. medicals happen. Deal must be finalized by 5 pm Friday. No exceptions.

‘He’ would be an American League scout who was speaking to Kaplan in regards to the Tanaka situation.

For what it’s worth, Kaplan reiterated on Sunday that he believes the Chicago Cubs – despite their heavy interest – are still considered to be a long shot in regards to signing the 25-year-old Tanaka.

Both the Dodgers and Yankees have been long viewed as the favorite while teams like the Chicago White Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks have attempted to get a bid in as well.

It’s expected Tanaka will be given a contract over $120 million dollars.

What does your gut tell you as to where he’s going? Also, if the Yankees get him do you think, thus having gone over the 189M lux tax limit, that they will ‘run the table’ and sign Balfour and Reynolds and give themselves the best chance for the post season? Thank you for an excellent informed article.

I think it is quite likely that they could add another arm, but I think that they are otherwise done if they get Tanaka. However if they miss him then I think Jiminez will come into play and possibly Balfour too. Reynolds signed a minor league deal with the Brewers which I thought was odd because he turned down the same thing from the Yankees.
