When new Penn State head football coach James Franklin had his introductory press conference, he referenced the term “Dominate the State” when discussing how he would like to see the recruiting results pan out.

Now, it appears that he’s taking that to the assistant coaching level as, according to Coaching Search, Temple Owls wide receiver coach Terry Smith is set to join the staff at Penn State.

CoachingSearch has learned that Temple wide receivers coach Terry Smith will join James Franklin’s staff at Penn State. Smith is a graduate of Penn State University. He previously served as the head coach at Gateway HS from 2002-2012.

As you can see, Smith is part of that growing group lately that are making the jump from the high school ranks to working their way up the major collgiate ones, like Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn or Clemson Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris.

Smith would play an instrumental part on the staff, especially in helping with the development of sophomore quarterback Christian Hackenberg. No, he’s not the QB coach, but getting that Penn State WR group on the same page will only help Hackenberg in the long run.W

With this hire, Franklin’s staff at Happy Valley is nearing completion.
