The San Francisco 49ers thought they had found a kicker in David Akers after his historic 2011 season. But Akers completely hit a wall in 2012, eventually leading to his release.

San Francisco, in need of a kicker began scouring the wire and eventually settled on Phil Dawson, who was absolutely flawless for San Francisco in 2013. The team is hoping to retain him and the feeling is mutual as Dawson said he ‘absolutely’ wants to re-sign with the 49ers.

"#49ers kicker Phil Dawson said he’s sure talks will take place soon about a new contract. He said he “absolutely” wants to re-sign w/ 49ers."

Coming off two straight NFC Championships, one can understand why Dawson would like to return. Add in that he’ll be kicking in much more weather friendly stadium next season (no more swirling Candlestick Park winds) and things couldn’t get much better for a free agent kicker.

Dawson, 39, has proven to be one of the most accurate field goal kickers in NFL history. He went 32 of 36 for San Francisco this season and didn’t miss on any of his seven postseason attempts.
