Sochi Olympics 2014: Alex Ovechkin says Yevgeny Plushenko should be Russia's flag bearer

Washington Capitals right winger Alex Ovechkin is one of the top stars, so there has been some discussion about the Russian carrying the country’s flag during opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics next month in Sochi, Russia.

While Ovechkin would be a solid choice to be Russia’s flag bearer, he has another athlete in mind: three-time Olympic medalist figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko.

“If Plushenko goes, then him,” Ovechkin told Sovetsky Sport. “That man is a living legend. But if [Plushenko] doesn’t go, there’s only one candidate: Ilya Kovalchuk.”

Of course, Plushenko has not yet been named to the Russian Olympics team, but he could earn the one spot as the nation’s men’s singles figure skating athlete after he skates next week in front of Russian officials.
