In the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka met one year after an epic match up. This time around, the two men went the distance once again, but Wawrinka was able to reverse the result and come away with the win.
The match came down to a wild back-and-fourth fifth set, with Wawrinka getting the final point and taking down the three-time defending champ Djokovic by a score of 6-2 4-6 2-6 6-3 9-7.
“Last year it was really tough. But this year I came back. I was not feeling great at the beggining. I am really, really, really happy,” Wawrinka said after his big win. “He is an amazing champion and kept coming back. I was really focused and feeling great on the court. I always fight, I always try. I was cramping. It is never easy. But now I am going to go for the ice bath for a long, long time.”
Wawrinka will now advance to the semifinals where he will face Tomas Berdych.
“He is a dangerous player with his service and baseline play,” Wawrinka said, “I will be ready, though.”
