The Dallas Cowboys played their regular season finale without starting quarterback Tony Romo, because of back surgery that took place on Dec. 27. Romo will need a few months to recover from the procedure, but the team — well, owner Jerry Jones — expects Romo to be 100 percent in time for the team’s training camp in the summer.

“I talk to Tony frequently, and so he’s feeling much better,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, via Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “As far as how he’s feeling, and frankly how he’s responding, is very good.

“I know that they don’t have any set schedule. But certainly we do expect him to get some work in before we start training camp.”

This will be the second consecutive offseason that Romo gets limited offseason work, and at 33 years old this has to be a growing concern for the Cowboys. Jones may be downplaying the issue, but Dallas will need to take a long look at finding a young quarterback to begin grooming.

Romo received a contract extension last year, but Jones would be wise to look at this year’s draft class and find a young quarterback that the team could potentially turn into their quarterback of the future.
