There were reports earlier today that Manchester United was considering making a move for Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata. Those talks are now reportedly “progressing well,” bringing a lot of hope to Old Trafford.
From Sky Sports:
Sky sources reported that talks between the two rivals are “progressing well’ which came after we learnt that Chelsea wanted in excess of £35 million for the diminutive midfielder.
There reportedly has been some haggling between the two clubs over money and whether Wayne Rooney would be included in the deal. Sky Sports‘ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague said the deal clearly benefits Manchester United, and might benefit Chelsea in a surprising way, presenting a challenge to the two clubs ahead of them in the Premier League table.
“Manchester United and Chelsea are negotiating the future of Juan Mata – and the idea is that Mata, who Chelsea are happy to let go, goes to Old Trafford in this transfer window,” Balague said.
“Chelsea are asking for £32million or with Wayne Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no to Rooney – but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.
“Manchester United need quality, Mata needs to get out of the situation he is in, and it would reinforce United for their meetings with (Chelsea’s title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from Jose Mourinho.”
United sit in seventh place and need to get points in the second half of the season if they want to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League tournament.
