The Toronto Blue Jays were quietly linked to the Masahiro Tanaka sweepstakes on Monday night, a sentiment not shared by The Star who says Toronto is not involved in the Tanaka bidding.
However, that doesn’t mean they’re not interested in how the Tanaka situation plays out.
Current free agent starting pitchers have been waiting for Tanaka to sign in hopes that his new contract would set the market. That has essentially held arms like Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana captive as they’ve refused to sign in recent weeks.
That embargo is soon to end when Tanaka finds a home and the Blue Jays will then look to sign a starting pitcher or two.
But the Jays are definitely in the hunt when it comes to the next tier of 2013-14 free-agent starting pitchers on the market — and that chase will make the next two weeks an exciting time for Jays fans.
