Report: Tony La Russa does not believe he will get job with Seattle Mariners

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports

Hall of Famer Tony La Russa was linked to a front office position with the Seattle Mariners this off-season. Retired from managing, the longtime manager of the Oakland A’s and St. Louis Cardinals expressed an interest in working on the business side of things.

Recently Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post Dispatch spoke with La Russa, who does not believe he will get the job with the Mariners:

“My name’s been mentioned. That’s all it is.

“It’s likely I won’t even get an interview. I’ve heard they’ve got a couple of good guys in house. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity and I would love to put my two cents in as to what contribution I could make. But I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“I was a little embarrassed by the attention.”

It seems worthwhile to disagree with La Russa on one point: if he wants the job, he will get an interview. While he might not have experience on the front office side of things yet, if Tony La Russa wants to be involved with your franchise, you at least take him out for a meal and hear what he has to say.
