The United States military said that it has offered to make its air and naval assets in the Black Sea available to help Russian authorities counter any terrorist threats on the Sochi Winter Olympics.
In a statement, Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said:
“The United States has offered its full support to the Russian government as it conducts security preparations for the Winter Olympics. Air and naval assets, to include two Navy ships in the Black Sea, will be available if requested for all manner of contingencies in support of – and in consultation with – the Russian government.”
Reuters reports that US military and intelligence officers have been drawing up contingency plans for evacuating Americans from Sochi in the event of a crisis, but have concluded there would be major obstacles facing a large scale effort by the military or other government resources to evacuate Americans – especially given Russia’s reluctance to allow any military forces on its soil.
The State Department has warned Americans to be viligant about their security, while US intelligence experts say that attacks are most likely to occur at places less heavily secured than Sochi, according to Reuters.
