This weekend, at UFC on FOX 10, perennial Heavyweight contender, Gabriel Gonzaga, takes on rising prospect Stipe Miocic in a critical Heavyweight bout. The winner of this bout will be one step closer to a title shot against the champion, Cain Velasquez. If Gonzaga were to eventually get a shot at Cain, it would be his second Heavyweight title shot in his UFC career. Today, we reminisce about the UFC 70 fight against Mirko Cro Cop that earned him a shot at UFC gold.

When the UFC brought in Pride legend, Mirko Cro Cop, into the UFC Heavyweight division, many believed he would obliterate his competition on his way to the Heavyweight title. After a successful UFC debut that saw him dispatch of Eddie Sanchez, Cro Cop was slated to fight the streaking Gabriel Gonzaga in a #1 contenders bout. In the pre-fight hype all anyone could talk about was Cro Cop’s deadly high kicks and his unbelievable amount of highlight reel KO’s. Many predicted a similar fate for Gonzaga, but no one could have ever predicted the outcome. In one of the most shocking finishes in UFC history, Gonzaga cracked Cro Cop with his own patented right high kick, knocking him out in the most brutal and shocking fashion imaginable.

The KO was one of the biggest upsets in UFC history and garnered Gonzaga a shot at Randy Couture at UFC 74, a fight he lost by TKO in round 3. Regardless, the highlight of the head kick KO lives on in infamy, and the UFC has released the footage as the ‘KO of the week’. Check out the head kick heard around the world in the video below.
