In an official statement released by the university on Wednesday, Cal head coach Sonny Dykes revealed the Art Kaufman, previously the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, will be taking over the same job for the Golden Bears.
Dykes said Kaufman, under whom the Cincinnati Bearcats finished in the top ten nationally last season in both rushing defense and total defense, should prove to be a great addition to the Cal staff:
I feel confident that Art Kaufman is the right coach to lead our defense. I’ve observed his career for many years and have a strong appreciation for what he has accomplished. His teams are always fundamentally sound and play hard. The thing that really stood out as we researched him is that all of his former players that we talked to said the highlight of their career was playing for Art. It’s a real credit to who he is as a person and a coach (CalBears.com).
Kaufman will inherit a woeful defense at Cal. The injury-plagued Golden Bears finished 124th in the country last season in total defense, surrendering 529.6 yards per game. They also ranked 124th in scoring defense, allowing 45.9 points per contest.
