It’s been six years since Dwight Howard competed at a international level, but that is soon to change according to Yahoo Sports.

Howard is reportedly set to return to Team USA Basketball and will play in the 2014 World Cup of Basketball.

After six years away, Houston Rockets star Dwight Howard will return to USA Basketball with an intent to play in the 2014 World Cup of Basketball, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Team USA’s full roster is expected to be announced on Thursday though Howard’s name appeared to leak through early.

Howard was a member of Team USA’s gold medal winning team in 2008 but had decided not to participate after that. He also played for Team USA in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship and the 2006 World Championships. His inclusion could suggest he plans to play for the 2016 Olympic team in Brazil.

So why the change of heart? Nobody really knows. It’s possible he simply wants to show pride/support to his country or as Adrian Wojnarowski suggests, it could be an effort to better his reputation which has taken a nasty ding in recent months/years.
