Today is the eighth anniversary of Kobe Bryant's 81 point game (Video)

Eight years ago today, Kobe Bryant made history. The Los Angeles Lakers guard scored 81-points in an NBA game, the second most ever scored in a single game – only behind Wilt Chamberlain who poured in 100 in a completely different era of basketball.

It was a remarkable achievement – even more impressive considering Bryant and his Lakers were down 14-points at the half to the Toronto Raptors.

A massive offensive attack launched by Bryant in the third quarter erased the Raptors lead and eventually pushed Los Angeles’ lead near twenty points, making the contest a laugher in the end. But it wasn’t the final score that was talked about, but rather Bryant who put up an absurd 55-points in the second half.

Keep in mind – these were all quality points. There was no garbage time here (outside of the final few minutes) as the Lakers were trailing heavily until the fourth quarter.

Who knows if we’ll see something like this again. Outside of Kevin Durant and possibly LeBron James, there doesn’t appear to be a player in the league (currently) who could even get close.
