La Liga side Athletico Madrid are planning a bid for on-loan goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, according to reports in The Daily Star. It is believed that they will bid over $32m for the Belgian.
Atletico manager, Diego Simeone, said of the player:
For me anything paid for Courtois would be cheap. He’s a young guy who has a huge future and is on track to becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Signing a goalkeeper of his caliber would be a big step, but it will not be easy. It depends on what Courtois wants, the club (Chelsea) knows our needs, but it is not up to us, because he is is not our player.
While Courtois is currently on loan from Chelsea, it is not clear what the club’s plans are for the goalkeeper. Much of his long term future at the club will depend on the future of current Chelsea number one Petr Cech.
The Czech international recently broke the club record for clean sheets at 209, and has produced some excellent performances this season.
Courtois is a natural successor to Cech, being of similar stature, also left footed and a decade younger than Cech’s 31. However, it is unlikely that Chelsea will part with one of the best goalkeepers in the world easily or cheaply, though they will have to make a decision over the position in the not too distant future.
