Venus and Serena Williams may end boycott of Indian Wells

Reports this week suggest tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams may be ending their 13-year boycott of the Indian Wells tournament.

Serena spoke about contemplating the decision in an interview at the Australian Open last Friday, saying the thought had “crossed [her] mind.” While she hasn’t officially announced she’ll be at the tournament, her name did appear on the list of entries for this year’s event released on Wednesday.

Indian Wells director Steve Simon said that alone was encouraging:

While it is too soon to know whether she will play or not, we are pleased to see Serena’s name on the entry list.

Based on her comments at the Australian Open, we know playing in the tournament is something she is thinking about (Reuters).

Back in 2001, the sisters were slated to meet in a semifinal match. Venus pulled out of the match due to a knee injury, and the disappointed crowd responded with indefensible levels of anger The experience was so negative the Williams vowed never to return again.
