When the Opening Ceremony kicks off next month for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, it will be six-time Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser who leads the Canadians as the nation’s flag bearer.

With the help of Wickenheiser, Canada has won the last three Olympic hockey gold medals.

Speed skater Clara Hughes carried the flag for Canada during the opening ceremony for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Wickenheiser, who is one of the greatest female hockey players of all time, is certainly deserving of the honor.

For Pittsburgh Penguins fans, this is also good news. Many thought that Sidney Crosby would be a candidate to carry the flag in Sochi, which would have meant that he would need the team early before the NHL’s Olympic break. Now, he won’t have to miss a game.
