Alex Ovechkin ruled out for Washington Capitals game vs. New Jersey Devils

Alex Ovechkin has been ruled out for the Washington Capitals game vs. the New Jersey Devils with a lower-body injury believed to be a groin strain after being hurt in the Jan. 19 game vs. the New York Rangers.

This will be the second game the reigning Hart Trophy winner missed after he was unable to suit up for the Caps 2-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

“We’re not going to put him in a position that he could play, hurt himself and set it back,” Washington head coach Adam Oates said. “If he’s okay to go, obviously his conditioning would be behind so that’s why you’d limit the minutes but if he’s not ready to go we won’t play him.”

Ovechkin has 35 goals and 49 points in 47 games played this season. His 35 goals leads the NHL by seven over Joe Pavelski.
