Boston Red Sox sign outfielder Scott Cousins to a minor league contract

The World Series champion Boston Red Sox lost out on Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran to the New York Yankees. It was a bit disappointing for Red Sox fans when they found out that another beloved outfielder had joined ‘the dark side’.

They still have Shane Victorino who will more than likely move to center field and bump either Gomes or Jackie Bradley Jr. to right field. Boston added a little bit of depth today as they were able to agree to terms with outfielder Scott Cousins according to Jerry Crasnick on Twitter.

Cousins only has three years of experience in the league but has yet to play a full season with the Miami (Florida) Marlins or the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He spent pretty much all of 2013 with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate as he only played seven games at the Major League level.

The deal could include an invitation to Spring Training.

Beltran was never a serious consideration for Boston. Look up his dWAR. It’s not that Beltran is not a good outfielder, he’s a terrible outfielder. dWAR -21. -21!!!! Is that even possible. Talk about a defensive liability!!!!
