The Cleveland Browns finally found their new head coach on Thursday night, with Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine accepting the job. Pettine’s first order of business will be to fill out his coaching staff, but he will also need to look over the roster and evaluate what positions the Browns need the most.
One position of interest will be quarterback, where most people anticipate the Browns will look early in the NFL Draft.
However, Pettine wasted no time complimenting Brian Hoyer, who looked impressive for the Browns before he suffered a torn ACL.
“I think he’s a winner,” Pettine said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “I think the intangibles with Brian are off the charts. I think he’s a football junkie and I think you can tell he loves the game. He came from a system where he learned from the best in the game and that showed on the field. A lot of people based on his background kind of fall asleep on him a little bit.
“I think he’s a winning quarterback in this league.”
With the compliments from Pettine, it appears that Hoyer will at least get an opportunity to compete for the starting job even if the Browns select a quarterback early in the 2014 NFL Draft.
