MLB Rumors: New York Mets interested in Fernando Rodney

With the Tampa Bay Rays recently signing closer Grant Balfour, Fernando Rodney is out of a job.

There were rumors suggesting a possible reunion between Rodney and the Rays, but that understandably will no longer happen.

Early Friday, it was said the Baltimore Orioles – who had expressed previous interest in Rodney – had not spoken to his representatives in ‘weeks’. Add in that they’re reportedly comfortable using an in-house closer, Rondey’s options continued to dwindle. However, according to ESPN New York, the Mets have expressed interest in the closer and have spoken to his agents recently.

In the wake of the Mets losing out on Grant Balfour, Sandy Alderson has been in dialogue with free-agent closer Fernando Rodney’s representatives, a source familiar with the team’s interest told ESPNNewYork.com.

Bobby Parnell is currently in line for saves with the Mets, but it’s not known how well he’ll recover from a herniated disc or if he can be relied upon.

No contractual details have leaked in regards to the potential deal.
