The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to get both Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash back in the near future and according to Larry Coon, it’s likely they’ll be playing with Pau Gasol for the remainder of the season.
Gasol, a free agent at season end has been the subject of trade rumors for months (more like years) now and seemingly had a foot out the door earlier this month when the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers were talking a potential deal.
That trade, which would have sent Gasol to Cleveland in exchange for Andrew Bynum never manifested and given the Lakers current salary cap structure, Larry Coon believes it’s very likely Gasol finishes the season with the Lakers.
But there are no more Bynum-like deals to be had before the February trade deadline, so at best, Kupchak is looking at accomplishing the second goal but not the first. That may not be enough to get him to pull the trigger on a deal. I think it’s now fairly likely that Gasol remains a Laker for the remainder of the season.
