Three-star RB Rodney Smith commits to Minnesota

On Thursday night, the Minnesota Golden Gophers added another running back to their collection.

Three-star running back Rodney Smith committed to the Gophers on Thursday night.

The 5-11, 195-pound Smith attends Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Georgia.

Smith is considered the 82nd best running back, the 114th best player in Georgia and the 1,243rd best overall player in the class of 2014 according to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings.

Smith, who rushed for 2,201 yards last season, chose Minnesota over Appalachian State, East Carolina, Georgia State, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss, among others.

Smith becomes the second running back to commit to the Gophers, joining the highly touted Jeff Jones.

Jones, a Minnesota native, who attends Washburn High School in Minneapolis, committed to the Gophers way back in March. Lately, Jones has burst on to the scene.

According to 24/7 Sports’ composite rankings, he is the country’s ninth best running back, the top player in Minnesota and 60th best overall prospect in the class of 2014. He played in the Under Armour All-American game and has recently received offers from Florida and Michigan.
