An apparent head coach in waiting for an NBA team who would express interest, Brian Shaw put in a lot of quality time as an assistant coach for the Indiana Pacers. Focusing on the defensive side of things and player development, he served a key role in Indiana’s ascension to the top of the Eastern Conference before taking the head job with the Denver Nuggets this past off-season.
Shaw leads the Nuggets into Indiana for his return to town tonight, and he had the following to say about it (quotes from the Denver Post):
“There’s definitely love there…I feel it, I’m sure they feel it. We still pull for one another…
“…After they didn’t want us anymore in L.A., they welcomed me with open arms in Indiana…They gave me an opportunity to continue to coach and to help have an impact on that group of guys. We grew a lot in the two years that I was there.”
Shaw brings a sub-.500 team (20-21) to face the best team in the NBA to date in the Pacers (34-8). With a sharp decline in offensive production from last season, among other issues, Shaw’s Nuggets will have their hands full as they try to steal a victory on the road.
