The Baltimore Orioles are hoping to have star third baseman Manny Machado in the fold by Opening Day in 2014. Rehabbing from surgery on his left knee, Machado has received nothing but glowing reports so far as he works his way back.
Machado spoke at a charity event on Friday night, and he was asked if he has a target date in mind for his return (quotes courtesy of MLB.com):
Not yet…When I’m 110 percent — I don’t know whether it’s in two months or next week — it’s something I’ll just have to get a feel for. And once I’m out there playing every day, I’ll have more of an idea when and where I can start.
“The doctor said everything’s going well and according to plan, so at this point it’s just seeing how healthy I am and how fast I can get out there…
“I’m able to do most things out on the field…It’s not 100 percent, but I’m able to catch grounders and do my routine.”
To be back for Opening Day would be nice symbolically but otherwise is not significant. If Machado is able to return early in the season and be himself, that is what matters for the Baltimore Orioles as they battle to contend in the wicked American League East.
