It seems odd to suggest Pablo Sandoval playing in a uniform other than that of the San Francisco Giants, but the fan favorite may just be doing so after the season – this according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
The Major League Baseball insider dropped the subtle nugget towards the end of a recent column:
As GM Brian Sabean said, “Perhaps his pending free agency might be his best medicine” for losing 42 pounds this offseason. Sandoval is showing off his new body in the Venezuelan Winter League. The Giants have been through a lot with Sandoval concerning his weight. Even if he has a good season, this may be his last with the Giants.
Sandoval has dealt with a handful of freak injuries with the Giants and went through weight issues for multiple seasons. Both Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy have previously shown public disappointment for Sandoval in regards to his weight issues.
All that said – it’s tough to imagine the Giants letting Sandoval walk as he’s not only a fan favorite, but a very serviceable third baseman when healthy and fit.
