Before Ben Askren ever stepped into an MMA cage, he was a highly regarded and accomplished wrestler. Askren was a two time NCAA national champion at the University of Missouri, and an Olympic wrestler. His wrestling has been his key to his success inside the cage and has helped him attain a record of 12-0. After parting ways with Bellator, Askren was unable to come to terms with the UFC, and decided to sign with the Asian promotion, ONE FC. While many criticized Askren’s decision, Askren himself has stated multiple times that he is content with his current situation.
While waiting for his first official fight in ONE FC, Askren has decided to shift his focus on wrestling once again. This past weekend, Askren wrestled at the AGON World Championships against Michael Poeta. Poeta is an accomplished wrestler himself, as he was an NCAA All-American wrestler at University of Illinois. You can watch their entire match in the video above. Askren ultimately defeated Poeta by decision 11-10 in overtime.
