Justin Morneau gets permission from Larry Walker, will wear number 33

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rockies have not retired #33 in honor of Larry Walker. At least not yet. The team wants Todd Helton‘s #17 to be the first number retired in franchise history. Once that happens, Walker’s number should follow shortly.

In the meantime Justin Morneau wanted to wear 33 in Walker’s honor. He recently received Walker’s blessing, and made his first appearance in his new uniform at this past weekend’s Rockies Fanfest/

Here’s the photo (courtesy of the Colorado Rockies team Twitter feed):

Walker and Morneau are both from Canada. As a kid, Morneau was a hockey goalie and his favorite player was Patrick Roy. Walker, also a hockey player, wore 33 as a tribute to Roy.

Roy is currently the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. Maybe the three can get together sometime in Denver.
