This past offseason, the Detroit Pistons reportedly wanted to keep point guard Jose Calderon in Motown and were less than thrilled when he departed, signing with the Dallas Mavericks.
And what was the reasoning behind Calderon bolting in free agency to sign with the Mavs? Josh Smith. Or rather, the Pistons desire to wait on Josh Smith.
Smith, a fellow free agent eventually decided to leave the Atlanta Hawks and sign with the Pistons but his inability to do so in a timely manner cost the Pistons their point guard according to Calderon himself.
“They were in contact with me, but I think they were waiting for Josh Smith, so I was just waiting and waiting, and Dallas came with a great offer … I couldn’t say no to that,” Calderon said Sunday before the Mavs faced the Pistons.
The loss of Calderon eventually lead to the Pistons acquisition of Brandon Jennings, a move which probably hasn’t fared overly well with Piston faithful.
