College football player, Conner Mertens, comes out to teammates as bisexual

Sexuality and the sport of football, unfortunately, are two things that still do not mix well together. In particular, the fear is still there for a good majority of football players to come out to their teammates and admit that they’re anything but straight.

However, Conner Mertens, a Williamette University kicker, was tired of being one of those and he came out to his teammates on Monday night, according to a story that was wonderfully done by the folks over at OutSports.com.

Mertens, who is set to be the front-runner for the team’s placekicker position in 2014, had asked head coach Glen Fowles for some time with the team, which he was ultimately granted after he came right out and told his head coach what the meeting was all about.

“I’m bisexual,” Mertens told Fowles. “I like dudes. I have a boyfriend. And next week, I’m going to tell the world.”

He did indeed tell the world on Tuesday, after he told the ones that are closest to him on a daily basis during his college journey–his teammates.
