Former NBA center Jason Collins will attend the State of the Union as Michelle Obama’s guest for Tuesday night’s address, according to Politico. After Collins came out in 2013 President Obama said it marked progress for the gay community.
“Jason Collins last year became the first active male athlete on a major American sports team to come out as openly gay, according to Politico. “He played for 12 years in the NBA. Obama has said his announcement marked progress for the gay community.”
Collins came out in a Sports Illustrated feature published on May. 6when he said, “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn’t the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, “I’m different.” If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I’m raising my hand.”
The State of the Union airs at 9:00 p.m. ET on CBS, NBC, ABC and cable news outlets such as CNN, FOx News and MSNBC which will have extended coverage in comparison to the network broadcast.
Collins was a free agent when he came out and has not signed with any NBA team.
