When free agency began, shortstop Stephen Drew thought he was going to cash in. Multiple teams expressed interest in the veteran and shortstops are almost always in demand. It was the perfect storm for Drew, or so he thought.
Multiple teams that were interested in Drew passed, many suggesting his asking price was too high.
Deemed a defensive wizard, Drew simply became too costly considering his lack of offensive firepower and the fact he would force the signing team to forfeit a draft pick as the Boston Red Sox extended him a qualifying offer.
Now just weeks before Spring Training is to begin, the market is quietly heating up around Drew and up to four teams have interest in the infielder, including the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays are one of four teams “in the mix” for shortstop Stephen Drew, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported Monday.
“They’re in the mix for a lot of players right now, so I think they’re a team of definite interest,” Heyman said on MLB Network.
