Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez is in the final year of a four year contract with the Detroit Tigers, but he doesn’t want it to be his last.

The former catcher turned DH told the Detroit News he hopes to re-sign with the Tigers, allowing him to stay beyond the 2014 season but understands things happen and they may not be able to bring him back due to other upcoming contracts.

"“I want to stay here, yes,” Martinez said. “But they have a lot going on. They have Scherzer; they have Miggy.”Max Scherzer can be a free agent after this season, Miguel Cabrera after next.“But you know what, man?” said Martinez. “I want to take this opportunity to thank the Tigers’ organization and all the fans, because when I had choices of where to go when I was a free agent, I came here because I felt it was the best chance to win."

Martinez says his opinion hasn’t changed and he still feels Detroit gives him the best opportunity to win, but there was no mention of a ‘hometown discount’ at this point in regards to a potential return.

The 35-year-old veteran was abysmal to start the 2013 season but bounced back nicely in the second half en route to a solid season.
