Saturday Night Live: Melissa McCarthy renames Super Bowl in first promo (Video)

The Super Bowl is this week but less than 24 hours before kickoff, a new episode of Saturday Night Live will be airing with guest host Melissa McCarthy. It marks the third time in McCarthy’s career that she’s been the host of SNL and the pre-Super Bowl festivities will likely play a big role in the tone of the show. In fact, the jokes have already started, as McCarthy’s promo features a joke about NBC not being able to say Super Bowl since Fox is hosting the show and not SNL’s home network.

We’ve seen Jay Pharoah and Keenan Thomson slay the sports impressions on SNL and with the Super Bowl in New York for the first time ever, we can fully expect the two to bust out some of their classic football personality impressions. A guess would say that Pharoah’s excellent Shannon Sharpe impression will make an appearance and we could see the first Peyton Manning impression from one of the new cast members as well.

It’s also possible that we could see some actual cameos as well, since the teams will be right there in New York before traveling to New Jersey the next night to play in the big game. The team preparations the night before the Super Bowl will likely mean they won’t appear, but they wouldn’t be the first two teams to go out on the town the night before the big game.

Either way, SNL is ready to launch us into a day full of Super Bowl coverage and that all starts with Melissa McCarthy hosting on Saturday night.
