Looking at Jay Z now, it’s hard to imagine he was once a struggling rapper unable to find a deal.
Hov was turned down by multiple record companies in the early to mid 1990’s which eventually lead to he, Dame Dash and Kareem Burke founding Roc-A-Fella records in 1996. Next came Jay’s classic album Reasonable Doubt and the rest became history.
Now a music mogul, Jay wanted to give a one-of-a-kind gift to his protege, fellow rapper J. Cole. But what do you get for a young 20-something who has everything he could ask for? How about your original Roc-A-Fella chain? Yep – that’s right. During a recent concert, Jay gave Cole his first ever, diamond-encrusted Roc-A-Fella chain to which Cole was almost speechless as he noted on Twitter.

You can watch the entire performance below, though Jay doesn’t start providing birthday gifts until around the 3:30 mark.
I have to say – that’s a pretty bad ass gift. Not only is it obviously worth a lot of money, but the musical history behind that chain is iconic in the hip-hop community.
