In recent days, the rumor mill had been churning, suggesting the Oakland Athletics were one of four teams interested in signing shortstop Stephen Drew. That does not appear to be the case though as according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Athletics are out on the Drew sweepstakes.

Reports had suggested the Athletics would move current shortstop Jed Lowrie to second base, giving Oakland a much more solid defensive infield but the A’s have no interest in doing so.

The Oakland Athletics are not considering signing free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew and moving Jed Lowrie to second base, sources say.

For one thing, the A’s are comfortable with an Eric Sogard-Nick Punto platoon at second. For another, some evaluators say that Lowrie might be more of a defensive liability at second than he is at short.

It was a bit of an odd rumor to begin with considering the A’s aren’t exactly known to be high spenders and while Drew does have a history in Oakland, that ship has sailed.
