The Seattle Mariners are still interested in free agent outfielder Nelson Cruz – this much we know. But are they willing to pay such an elevated price? It sounds questionable at best, so what other options does Cruz have if the Mariners decide to walk away from a potential deal?
Might a return to Texas be possible?
The Rangers have already moved on from Cruz but thanks to the qualifying offer they tendered the slugger, many teams are balking at giving up draft pick compensation to sign the power hitter.
That has lead Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal to suggest Nelson could find his way back to the Texas Rangers on a one-year, ‘pillow’ contract.
The Texas Rangers still could emerge as a fallback option for Nelson Cruz, most likely on a one-year deal.
A one-year deal would be good for both parties considering it would allow Cruz to rebuild his stock (which has fallen pretty hard with his PED suspension) and it would allow the Rangers from making an expensive, long term commitment to Cruz considering we don’t know how he’ll perform without the performance enhancing drugs.
