There has been an outpouring of desire from fans to see Gambit in a much bigger role in the world of Marvel Films; however, other than a minor role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have had no such luck. However, there is word going around today that there is a very good possibility that this may be changing here soon.
As most of you already know Empire Magazine has had some pretty extensive coverage of the upcoming film X-Men: Days of Future Past. They even put out a series of 25 Limited Edition Covers of their latest issue featuring the many faces of the film. Yes…I did say 25.
In that very same issue, they had an opportunity to speak to Lauren Shuler Donner, one of the producers of the X-Men films. She expressed not only her desire to get a standalone Gambit film rolling, but she was pretty clear about who she would like to see in the role.
“I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum,” Shuler Donner reveals. “That doesn’t have to be a great big movie. It’s a thief in New Orleans, it’s a whole different story. He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He’s such a sweetheart.”
When she says that he is on board, she is certainly not kidding. It is well known that Channing Tatum is quite the X-Men fan. Last year, during a press conference for his film White House Down, Tatum expressed his interest in suiting up for his own mutant adventure.
“I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favourite.” He said. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real.” He continued. “No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”
I’m not going to lie to you, this kind of intrigues me. Ever since I saw the name Remy LeBeau come across the screen in the original X-Men films, I have been dying to see this character utilized in his full potential. Granted, yes…he did get used (somewhat) in the film X-men Origins: Wolverine, but let’s be honest, this is one of the few X-men who truly not only deserve, but could sustain their own standalone film.
It would be so interesting to see the other side of him when he is not with the X-Men. As Channing Tatum said, he really is the punk rock of superheroes. He skates a very thin line between what is considered to be right and wrong, and has a very different story than some of your traditional superheroes.
Now, all that has to be done is for the studio to come on board, find a director, find a cast, get a filming schedule, secure a release date, and let’s get this party started. Sounds simple enough, right?
As of right now, there are no “official” plans in the works, but know that this is on the minds of the people who matter, which at the end of the day, is a giant step ahead of where we were not so long ago.
What do you think of the possibility of Channing Tatum suiting up as Gambit? Do you think that an origin story of Gambit would work? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
