2014 Sochi Olympics: Gustav Nyquist hopes to replace Johan Franzen for Team Sweden

Gustav NyquistDetroit Red Wings right wing Johan Franzen will not suit up for Team Sweden in the Sochi Olympics but one Detroit teammate could be his replacement as Gustav Nyquist is under strong consideration to replace him on the roster, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“That would be an unbelievable experience, to be able to go to the Olympics,” Nyquist said. “It wouldn’t be the way you’d want to get in, seeing one of your teammates hurt, not being able to go. I know Johan would have loved to go, but the situation is what it is. Obviously, I’d be more than happy to go.”

Franzen had to pull out of the Olympics due to lingering effects from a concussion suffered Dec. 15. He had been out of the Wings lineup since Sunday when he made his return to the ice but after complained of dizziness and was palced on the IR.

The 24-year-old Nyquist has nine goals and eight assists in 28 games this season in a season he has seen his most extensive action with Detroit after playing sparingly with the club the past two seasons.
