Dubai Desert Classic: Rory McIlroy retains lead after day two

Rory McIlroy followed up his sizzling round of 63 on Thursday with a 70 on Friday to retain his lead at the Dubai Desert Classic.

He’s one shot ahead of Brooks Koepka, who shot a 65 on Friday to move to 10-under for the tournament.

McIlroy, who was reportedly battling an upset stomach, told reporters he didn’t feel as comfortable out on the links as he felt on the first day:

Hopefully that’s my bad round out of the way and I can shoot a couple of better ones over the weekend.

It looked for a while like I could build a three-four shot lead.

The wind was up and I didn’t feel as comfortable as I did yesterday. The wind is supposed to get up in the next couple of days as well – I don’t mind because I feel I’m hitting the ball well enough and wind usually makes it a bit more of a ball striking contest (Reuters).

Tiger Woods, McIlroy’s playing partner, turned in a round of 73. Woods is currently eight shots off the lead.
