Former WEC Lightweight champion and MMA veteran, Jamie Varner, will step into the Octagon tomorrow on just a few weeks notice to fight rising prospect, Abel Trujillo. According to an Instagram post by Varner, he cut 30 pounds this past week to make the 155 pound limit:
Along with the picture was this message from Varner:
#transformation for #ufc169 I went from 185lbs to 175lbs then today 165lbs. Only 9 more pounds to go. Best weight cut I’ve ever had. Thanks to all the trainers and nutritionist at #impactmma #impactmmaAZ #impactleader #teamVarner #teamImpact #gettingbettereveryday #fitness #physique #fitspo #independencegym #independenceAZ
30 pounds seems like an incredibly high number, but these are highly trained athletes who have figured out weight-cutting down to a science. Fighters slim down before the weigh-ins, and then bulk up over the next 24 hours until the fight. It is a common method, but we see time and time again that the weight-cut sometimes ruins a fighter’s stamina. We will see how Varner responds to the weight-cut tomorrow night due to his history of having a weak gas tank.
Varner takes on Abel Trujillo tomorrow night in the opening bout of the UFC 169 pay per view. I interviewed both men about the fight, their training camps, and much more. Check out Varner’s interview, and Trujillo’s interview.
